Adding Tech to A Z3 Using an Android Phone

I had prepared a long post about this, but I originally wrote it in MS Word and when I found out how much work it was going to take to turn it into a true post, I said "Forget it".

Instead, here's the first paragraph.  If you want to read the whole thing you can get it as a PDF from the link below.

Sometimes I envy people who have newer cars with advanced tech already built in. Recently, however, I decided to see if I couldn’t give my car (1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster) a bit of a technology upgrade by using my Smartphone to host a few new capabilities.  Specifically, I wanted to use it for navigation, engine and performance monitoring, music playback, and (of course) hands-free calling.  And I wanted an easy-to-use interface to tie everything together that wouldn’t require taking too much attention away from driving.  I wanted it to be able to change applications and control music as simply as possible.
